Summary:
“A Letter to God” is a short story about faith, hope, and irony. It follows a poor farmer named Lencho who lives with his family in a small house on a hill in rural Mexico. He relies entirely on his crops to feed his family. One year, he eagerly awaits rain for his cornfield, and when it finally comes, it turns into a destructive hailstorm, destroying his entire crop.
Devastated but full of faith in God, Lencho writes a letter asking God for 100 pesos to replant and support his family. He mails it at the village post office. The postmaster and other employees, touched by Lencho’s deep faith, decide to help. They collect whatever money they can (only 70 pesos) and send it to Lencho, signed “God”.
When Lencho receives the money, he is not surprised — he truly believes God has sent it. However, seeing only 70 pesos, he becomes angry and writes another letter to God, asking for the remaining 30 pesos, but warns not to send it through the post office, because he believes the post office employees stole the rest.
